The Balkans: Croatia, Bosnia & Slovenia Itinerary
Day 1 (Aug 31), Depart Home City To Dubrovnik, Croatia
Arrange your departure flight to arrive in Dubrovnik, Croatia on Sunday, September 1, 2019.
Day 2 (Sept 1), Arrive in Dubrovnik and transfer to hotel. After a long flight from home to Croatia, our photography adventure begins. For those who have the energy, your exploration of this beautiful Mediterranean city can begin with a short introduction along the cobblestoned streets of Dubrovnik. We’ll explore into the early evening hours until we gather for our welcome dinner.
Day 3 (Sept 2), We’ll begin our morning by entering into the walled city with camera in hand discovering all that Dubrovnik has to offer. This medieval city has lots of charm, just follow the cobblestoned streets and explore the narrow passageways throughout the city where photographic opportunities are endless. Street performers, diverse architecture, and well-preserved medieval walls allow your imagination to wander back up in time. You’ll have free time for sightseeing in the afternoon before meeting up for a late afternoon shoot. The medieval walls offer spectacular views of the city, the sea, islands and mountains and we’ll use this vantage point to make the most of the light for some creative long exposures and blue hour shots.
Day 4 (Sept 3), Early risers have the opportunity to capture the sunrise over the Adriatic coast from a city vantage point before we depart for Mostar in Bosnia-Herzegovina. We’ll drive the scenic route along the Adriatic coast. We make a short stop for photogrpahy at Počitelj or Blagaj town before checking in to our hotel. Arrival to Mostar where we’ll spend the afternoon and evening wandering through the charming town with our cameras.
Day 5 (Sept 4), We begin the day with a sunrise shoot in the UNESCO protected town of Mostar which is most famous for it’s beautiful historic Ottoman-style bridge, which spanned the Neretva river in what is considered the historic center of the city. Mostar was named after the bridge keepers who in medieval times guarded the Stari Most (Old Bridge). Photographic highlights also include majestic mosques, medieval architecture, street art and remnants of the Yugoslavia war. A visit to Mostar is a cultural and a rewarding photography experience.
Day 6 (Sept 5), We wake early for another chance to capture the soft morning light on Mostar. A late morning departure will put us on the road towards Plitvice Lakes National Park. We’ll take the scenic route thru the Bosnian countryside for some photography stops. If time allows, we’ll visit Una National Park, where three amazing rivers have created deep canyons, wild waterfalls and cascades, all surrounded by pristine forests.
Day 7 (Sept 6), We’ll have a full day to photograph the lakes, waterfalls and caves in this incredible UNESCO world heritage site, Plitvice Lakes National Park. Here we’ll have the opportunity to move at a leisurely pace and explore with our cameras and try some creative techniques using long shutter speeds to capture that softness of water flowing over the verdant green cliffs. After our morning group shoot there will be free time to explore the lakes alone. Late afternoon we’ll meet up to make the most of the play of golden light and reflections in the water.
Day 8 (Sept 7), An early morning visit to the park will allow us to explore Plitvice lakes one more time before meeting up for a hearty breakfast. Our next destination is located in Slovenia, where the gorgeous glacial Lake Bled and its tiny island lies amidst the Alps.
Day 9-11 (Sept 8-10), We’ll have 2 full days to explore the beautiful Gorenjska region starting with a sunrise shoot at the shore of Lake Bled. From Bled Castle perched up on the cliff top we’ll capture superb panoramas of the lake with its island and Baroque church. Visit the spectacular Vintgar Gorge the perfect location to experiment with capturing fast-flowing water and try out some long exposures. Our second glacial lake is Bohinj with a completely different feel. Here we’ll explore a variety of compositions on the lake shore and capture reflections and intimate landscapes. A short drive takes us to the surrounding picturesque villages where you’ll have the opportunity to capture traditional agricultural practices, including the landmark hayracks of Slovenia, architecture and scenes of rural village life. Cap off the evenings with a sunset shoot at the lakeside.
Day 12-13 (Sept 11-12), Our route takes us over the Vrsic pass, the highest pass in the Julian Alps with incredible views across the Slovenian Alps. We travel down to the Soca River Valley to explore more of the Triglav National Park. Capture the incredible emerald waters of the Soca and discover gorges and waterfalls as we hike along the riverbanks. As well as capturing stunning landscapes, we may be lucky with some wildlife photography and will also take the opportunity to photograph the historical World War I remnants along the trail. Our route will take us on an exciting tour of some of highest mountains in Slovenia offering incredible views across Slovenia and into Italy.
Day 14 (Sept 13), We leave the Alps and head to Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia and a gem of a city. We will have full day to wander the charming streets of the old city camera in hand and capture the highlights of Ljubljana including baroque churches, diverse architectural details and the castle as well as trying our hand at some street photography and candid portraits in Ljubljana’s bustling marketplace and along the café-strewn riverbanks.
Day 15 (Sept 14), After breakfast check-out from the hotel. Transfer to Ljubljana airport.
